Dealing with Dessert Spills on Carpets
Whether it’s a birthday party that got a little out of hand or a late-night ice cream mishap on your couch, dessert spills are one of those household inevitabilities. The sticky, sugary nature of most sweet treats makes them particularly tricky to deal with, but act fast and you’ve got a great chance of getting your carpet looking good as new. Here’s our guide to dealing with dessert spills on carpets, broken down by the most common culprits.
Common Dessert Spills and How to Treat Them
Ice cream. Start by scooping up as much of the ice cream as possible with a spoon. Don’t rub, cause this spreads the stain. You can try mixing one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water and blot the stain with a clean cloth, working from the outside in.
Cold water is key here, as warm water can set the dairy proteins into the fibres.
Chocolate cake or brownies. Let any solid pieces dry slightly before attempting to remove them — wet chocolate smears and makes things worse. Once dried, gently scrape away the solids, then treat the remaining stain, blotting carefully until the stain lifts.
Custard or cream. These dairy-based spills need to be treated quickly before they soak in. Blot up as much liquid as possible first. You could then apply a solution of cold water and a small amount of white vinegar. Blot firmly but gently, repeating as needed. Be careful with DIY solutions though, and make sure to test anything first before you use it on visible areas of your carpet.
Jam or fruit-based desserts. The natural sugars and dyes in jam can stain quickly. Scoop up any solids immediately, then use cold water.
Syrup or caramel sauce. These thick, sticky spills need warm (not hot) water to loosen them up. Blot away as much as possible, apply your warm soapy water solution, and be patient. Syrup takes a little more time to lift fully.
