How to Remove Wax or Candle Drips From Carpet

A flickering candle on the coffee table, a birthday cake carried in from the kitchen, a scented candle in the corner – these are all lovely moments…. right up until the wax ends up on the carpet. Before you panic, wax is actually one of the more manageable carpet mishaps to deal with at home. Knowing how to remove wax or candle drips from carpet correctly makes all the difference between a clean result and a permanent reminder of the occasion, so here’s exactly what to do.

Step One: Let It Set

The instinct when something spills on your carpet is to act immediately, but wax is the exception to that rule. Trying to remove soft or liquid wax will only spread it further into the fibres and make the job way harder. Instead, let the wax harden completely before you touch it.

Hint: If you’re in a hurry, place a bag of ice over the wax for a few minutes to speed up the process.

Step Two: Break It Up and Remove the Bulk

Once the wax is fully hardened, use a blunt knife, spoon, or the edge of a credit card to gently chip away as much of the solid wax as possible. Work carefully to avoid pulling or damaging the carpet fibres. Vacuum up the broken pieces as you go to keep the area clear. The goal here is to remove as much physical wax as possible before moving on to the next step.

Step Three: Apply Heat to Draw Out the Rest

Still some stubborn wax reaming? You could try this technique for removing what remains:

  • Place a clean white cloth or a sheet of plain brown paper over the wax residue
  • Then apply a warm iron on a low setting directly on top. The heat melts the wax still embedded in the fibres, which is then absorbed up into the cloth or paper.
  • Lift and replace the cloth frequently as it absorbs the wax, and never apply the iron directly to the carpet itself.
  • Repeat until no more wax transfers onto the cloth.

Step Four: Treat Any Remaining Colour or Residue

Coloured or scented candles can leave a dye stain behind even after the wax is removed. Treat any remaining discolouration with a small amount of carpet stain remover, blotting gently with a clean cloth until the stain lifts.
