• Remove your shoes: Get into the habit of taking your shoes off as you enter your home and remind your kids to do the same. The higher the foot traffic in the area, the slower you should vacuum, so you can be thorough and remove all the dirt. If you vacuum your carpets around three times a week, dirt won’t sink into them and this prevents them from becoming discoloured. With lighter-coloured carpets, this is especially important. • Replace vacuum filters and bags: This should be done regularly, to prevent your vacuum from losing suction and not working properly. If the filter is not changed or the bag is full, the vacuum won’t be able to do its job properly and may use too much energy or cause damage to the vacuum cleaner itself. If you have pets in your home, the filter may have to be changed even more regularly.
• Deep clean: Your carpets and rugs need a professional clean twice a year (even without any drastic spills and mess which may require a professional carpet cleaner to save the day, or in this case, your carpet!). We all love the look of a fresh white couch – but what we don’t love is when it starts to look grubby and stained. Ever had an over-comfortable guest put their grubby shoes up on your lovely clean couch to settle in for an afternoon snooze? Here are a few tips on how to keep your white couch, looking pristine.

• Act quick when it comes to stain removals. The longer the stain sits there, the harder it is going to be to remove it. Depending on the fabric of your couch, if it’s something dry that has been spilt, vacuum it up. If it’s something wet, dab it up with paper towel (no scrubbing) before it gets absorbed, and then use a stain remover or upholstery cleaner that is suitable for your couch. You may also find you have your favourite spot on the couch, so rotating your cushions weekly, by shifting them up or down the couch will prevent wear and tear.
• Lint roll your couch weekly, this will remove any hairs or pet fluff from blankets and fabric.
