How to keep my light-coloured carpet looking clean

How to keep my light-coloured carpet looking clean

Neutrals, beige, and light greys are very popular carpet colours. They go well with most furniture and can add warmth into a room and home. With light carpets, comes the carpet cleaning process  that needs to be done correctly and often, to keep your light-coloured carpets looking light.
Keeping your carpet clean and smelling fresh will make a big difference in your home. Here are a few tips which may help you:

  • Remove your shoes: Get into the habit of taking your shoes off as you enter your home and remind your kids to do the same. This will prevent mud, sand, dirt and all sorts of bacteria and germs from outside being walked onto your carpets. If your guests see you remove your shoes, then they will usually do the same too, preventing you from having to awkwardly ask them to follow suit. You can always provide guest slippers for them to wear! Shoes have a harder tread on your carpet than slippers or bare feet, causing more wear and tear to your carpets.
  • Vacuum: vacuuming your carpets on a regular basis is a simple and effective way of keeping them cleaner for longer. The higher the foot traffic in the area, the slower you should vacuum, so you can be thorough and remove all the dirt. If you vacuum your carpets around three times a week, dirt won’t sink into them and this prevents them from becoming discoloured. With lighter-coloured carpets, this is especially important. Check our tips on how to vacuum properly, just to make sure you’re getting the most out of your vacuuming!
  • Replace vacuum filters and bags: This should be done regularly, to prevent your vacuum from losing suction and not working properly. If the filter is not changed or the bag is full, the vacuum won’t be able to do its job properly and may use too much energy or cause damage to the vacuum cleaner itself. If you have pets in your home, the filter may have to be changed even more regularly.
  • Deep clean: Your carpets and rugs need a professional clean twice a year (even without any drastic spills and mess which may require a professional carpet cleaner to save the day, or in this case, your carpet!). Doing this will help maintain your carpets and make them look brighter and fresher. As carpet cleaning experts, we of course recommend you call Drytron for a professional carpet clean.
  • Deal with stains immediately: Tackle the mess as soon as it happens, because the longer you leave it, the longer it will take to remove it. This may lead to discolouration, which is permanent damage. Start by gently blotting up any liquid spills with paper towel or cloths rather than scrubbing the mess deeper into the carpet. You should also do a spot test on a small patch of your light carpet, to make sure the cleaning product you’re using doesn’t bleach or discolour your carpet. If the stain is not lifting, can call in a professional carpet cleaner, like Drytron, to get your carpet looking new again.

Keep your white couch looking white

Keep your white couch looking white

We all love the look of a fresh white couch – but what we don’t love is when it starts to look grubby and stained. Ever had an over-comfortable guest put their grubby shoes up on your lovely clean couch to settle in for an afternoon snooze? Or have delightful children play finger painting with a Tim Tam on your sofa? A white couch is hard to keep white at the best of times, let alone when visitors unintentionally redecorate them. Here are a few tips on how to keep your white couch, looking pristine.

  • Act quick when it comes to stain removals. The longer the stain sits there, the harder it is going to be to remove it. Depending on the fabric of your couch, if it’s something dry that has been spilt, vacuum it up. If it’s something wet, dab it up with paper towel (no scrubbing) before it gets absorbed, and then use a stain remover or upholstery cleaner that is suitable for your couch. If you are unsure at this point, then rather call Drytron, the carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals, to sort it out.
  • Get a washable slipcover. This isn’t always an option but if you can find one that fits, this is a great solution, especially if you have young kids or pets. Being easy to wash in the machine, doing this weekly or being able to whip it off and wash it when you have a spill is a quick and easy option.
  • Rotate your cushions regularly. This helps to prevent discolouration from the sun. If your couch is directly in front of a window and often has the sunshine directly on it, then it might be a good idea to close the blinds or curtains when you are out for the day or not in the room. You may also find you have your favourite spot on the couch, so rotating your cushions weekly, by shifting them up or down the couch will prevent wear and tear.
  • Lint roll your couch weekly, this will remove any hairs or pet fluff from blankets and fabric.
  • Vacuum often, at least once a week. Vacuum the cushions, backrest and don’t forget the sides too, this helps prevent dust build up and can reduce allergies.
  • You don’t have to wait for a major spill, give Drytron a call to book a deep clean for your couch to keep it looking new. Having your couch professionally cleaned and giving it a deep clean every now and again, will help it to stay looking whiter and will maintain your couch, giving it a longer “lifespan”.

If you do have a major spill and don’t want to mess up your aesthetic piece, then give Drytron, the carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals  a call, we can help you out.
