Put the “Spring” back into your carpet

Put the “Spring” back into your carpet

As the cooler Winter months are nearly over and we are in the beginning of Spring, why not spruce up your carpet with a “Spring clean”? Your carpets may have a few more marks on them after the extra foot traffic of being indoors during the Winter months, not to mention muddy feet from the wet weather!

As the days grow warmer and sun comes out, you may feel you want to throw open your doors, let the sunshine and freshness of Spring into your home. When Spring comes around we all get that sudden urge to do a little cleaning, get our pantries and cupboards organised, have a little clear out and perhaps do a deep clean in the bathroom and kitchens. But don’t forget about the most important surface to clean, your carpet! We know carpet cleaning  is not as exciting as colour coding your wardrobe, but it will make such a difference to your home.

Here are a few tips on what you can do to spruce up your carpet and get it Spring ready:

  • Firstly, vacuum your carpets, you probably hear this a lot, but a good vacuum is an important part of the carpet cleaning process. This is especially important if you have pets, read our tips for eliminating pet odours ‎from your home!
  • Deodorize your carpet. Baking soda and essential oils may add a fresh scent to your carpets and room. Mix about 10-15 drops of essential oils into a bag of baking soda. Mix it up and leave it for a while, to allow the oils to be completely absorbed. Sprinkle the scented baking soda onto your carpets and leave it for a few minutes, then vacuum it up. There are a lot of different essential oils out there with different properties – lavender is calming and grapefruit may help balance moods. Do a little research and choose the scent you like best. Don’t forget to do a patch test before you apply it all over your carpet or rug!
  • If you have rugs, once vacuumed properly, take them outside and leave them there for a couple of hours to air in the sunshine.
  • Shift the furniture a little. You may have your couch or coffee table in the same position on your carpet for a long time. This will cause dents, so shift your furniture slightly to allow the carpet to recover from the pressure.
  • Fluff your carpet. We walk on our carpets daily and sometimes they also need a little “pick me up”. You can do this to the affected areas by dampening and then heating up the area. Spray a little water or use an ice block over the area you want to dampen, then use a hairdryer to dry the area, while fluffing the carpet with your fingers, while moving the hot air backwards and forwards. A deep clean will also make your carpets brighter and fluffier. Remove shoes before walking on the carpet if you would like to keep it looking fluffier for longer.
  • Spring is also a great time to have your carpet or rugs professionally cleaned. Give Drytron, the carpet cleaning experts a call to book a spring for into your carpets, rugs, upholstery, and curtains!

6 Ways to get rid of your pet odours

6 Ways to get rid of your pet odours

Ever walk into a room, smell something unpleasant, but you can’t figure out where it’s coming from? Maybe your beloved pet is the culprit? Or maybe you don’t even have a pet but the previous owners or tenants did, and you want to get rid of that musty smell?

Pets can transfer odours onto your carpets and furniture in a few different ways, the obvious one being from their urine. Most pets are trained to go and do ‘their business’ outside, but you may find the odd accident on your carpets, or worse, couch, that you may even be unaware of until it has really ingrained itself into the fibres and started to pong. Another way is from pet saliva on toys that are left on the floors or carpets. Dogs and cats also sweat through their paws, which can then be transferred onto your floors and carpets. All of these odours combined, (along with a few more), can result in some pretty unpleasant smells that can be hard to get rid of.

Here are a few options you can try, to banish pet odours from your home:

Carpet cleaning  and vacuuming should be done often. You need to vacuum the couch, carpets, curtains, rugs, and any other flooring, to get rid of tiny hairs and residue that gets left behind. Then vacuum some more! Don’t forget to clean your vacuum filters out as often as needed, otherwise you won’t be doing an effective job. When you mop, try adding vinegar into the water to help eliminate animal smells. If this doesn’t work, you may need to call in the carpet cleaning professionals  for a deep clean of your carpets and upholstery too.

Clean pets toys and items they chew and play with. Don’t forget to clean out their water and food bowls too, as this is where there a lot of saliva and bacteria builds up, with corresponding odours. Baking soda is a great trick for absorbing odours. Mix it with vinegar and spray onto items that can’t be washed easily.

Clean your pet’s bed! This can also be vacuumed when you vacuum your carpets regularly. Depending on the type of bed, the cover may be machine washable. But if you have a bigger, fancier one, why not ask the carpet and upholstery cleaning professionals to clean that too next time you have a professional carpet clean. Make sure you also clean in all the nooks and crannies around your pet’s favourite places to lounge.

Air your house and do this often. Open windows and doors allowing air to flow through your house. You can also use a room freshener, diffuser, or spray to add a fresh scent to the house, but don’t do this to try and mask the smell as it may just make it worse: be sure to clean too.

Wash your pets or send them to the groomers if you would prefer. Don’t forget to dry their fur after you wash them – a damp smelling dog is almost worse than if you didn’t wash them at all.

Get your carpets and rugs deep cleaned at least twice a year. Call in the carpet cleaning professionals to get your home, carpets and upholsteries looking and smelling clean and fresh.
